‘Modern Family’ Child Stars Get Pay Bumps

Emmys photos

EXCLUSIVE: This should go nicely towards college tuition — after month-long salary renegotiations, the child stars of ABC hit Modern Family are finalizing new deals with series producer 20th Century Fox TV that will come with much bigger paychecks. I hear  Rico Rodriguez, 14, who plays Gloria’s (Sofia Vergara) wise-beyond-his-years son Manny; Nolan Gould, 13, who plays the Dunphys’ dim-witted son Luke; Ariel Winter, 14, who plays his book-smart sister Alex; and Sarah Hyland, 21, who plays their college-bound older sister Haley, will be making in the neighborhood of $70,000 an episode, about tripling their current salaries. Hyland, who is the oldest of the juvenile Modern Family cast members and had bigger prior credits, has been getting slightly more than her young co-stars, but I hear there will likely be parity among the quartet going forward. Rodriguez, Gould and Winter negotiated together, while Hyland’s reps handled her talks separately.

As for Modern Family‘s other kid actor, five-year-old Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who joined last fall as Cameron and Mitchell’s adopted daughter, replacing the twins who played the role early on, I hear her agents too tried to renegotiate her deal but that didn’t happen as she has been on the show only one season.

The salary renegotiations for the young cast of Modern Family were much faster and far less dramatic than the talks between their adult counterparts and 20th TV, which dragged on for months and escalated into a standoff, garnered with a boycotted table read and a lawsuit, before an agreement was reached exactly a month ago. Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and Sofia Vergara, who negotiated together, are now making in the $170,000-180,000 range per episode, up from $65,000, with built-in sizable year-to-year increases and a small piece of the series’ lucrative back-end.
