Adele Apologizes For Brit Awards Finger Flip

Adele speaks on stage as she receives the award for Best British Female Solo Artist during The BRIT Awards 2012 at the O2 Arena in London on February 21, 2012 -- Getty Premium

Adele continued her musical award show reign on Tuesday at the Brit Awards, but not without a middle finger mishap.

Following in M.I.A.'s Super Bowl footsteps, the 23-year-old singer - who took home best British female and best British album - became frustrated when her acceptance speech for the night's top award was cut short.

"Nothing makes me prouder than coming home with six Grammys and then coming to the Brits and winning album of the year. I'm so proud to be British and to be flying our flag," she said during the speech as host James Corden was forced to interrupt her in order for Blur to take the stage.

"Can I just say, then, goodbye and I'll see you next time round," Adele added before giving the finger, which was briefly seen live on Britain's ITV1.

Later backstage, Adele apologized for the incident, the BBC reported.

"I flung the middle finger. That was for the suits at the Brit Awards, not my fans. I'm sorry if I offended anyone but the suits offended me," she told reporters. "I was about to thank the British public for all their support but they cut me off. So thank you very much for all your support. It's amazing."

Following the awards show, ITV issued a statement, saying, "The Brits is a live event. Unfortunately the program was over-running and we had to move on. We would like to apologize to Adele for the interruption."

A rep for the Brit Awards also spoke out about the incident.

"We regret this happened and we send our deepest apologies to Adele that her big moment was cut short," the rep said in a statement. "We don't want this to undermine her incredible achievement in winning our night's biggest award. It tops off what's been an incredible year for her."

I'm shocked you're all so offended by a finger. Who cares? Here in NJ, we see it on the road every day.

LOL I agree too... but I think the point is that this was on TV and kids were watching it. I do agree on celebrities, actually all human beings for that matter, to be on proper behaviour in public. I would want that as a future mom and family person.

Adele, its sad. Why so proud of the crude and rude? When i was growing up foul language was rare and the finger was rarer still. What happened to us?

What she meant was, "I'm #1!"

Honestly, winning the biggest award in the U.K. where she is from, and she doesn't get to speak to her fans to thank them. The exec's deserved that middle finger i'd say.

Let's be honest, flipping them off was about the most moderate thing she could have done rather than cursing them about or making a huge scene like most people. It was her moment. And also, I'm pretty sure that if any of you were in her place at the time, you would've done far worse. So leave her alone.

She made a mistake. Get over it.

I'm sure it's safe to say we all have done/said something we wish we hadn't. Lucky for us, our mistakes aren't available on Youtube to be watched over and over. She apologized, so just let it go.

I love Adele and am a huge fan. It does suck that she was rushed off, but giving the middle finger? Really? Grow up a little.

It was the biggest award of the night but after Albarn had wittered on about all the arrrsselickers he was thanking, she has about 0.2 of a minute to say her bit. The whole thing was tacky and rubbish anyway

She's got anger issues.....big deal.....likely the first of many embarrassments she will cause herself throughout her life, that is if it is possible to embarrass her.

The same thing happened to Frank Sinatra in his Grammy Legend Awards speech in 1993.

People its a middle finger! I bet that most of us has done more with our fingers that is consider unlady like or obscene. Stop Judging! She was rudely interupted by that man, so therefore she did what she could. Go Adele!

I don't think Adele is aware of all those "rules" about the protocol for being a stunning new star. Somebody should have told her not to do such a thing. Well in my opinion she did it for the right reasons, she was trying to thank people and being cut off. I know it gets a little boring and long for those of us watching tv. but at least it wasn't for shock value and attention grabbing from another so called star. Think Madonna and her superbowl pal and the same kind of gesture. That was not for the right reasons that was for the limelight.

who gives a toss about the brits, the show has always been a shambles, remember mick fleetwood and sam fox, they should just give out the awards on the net.

Shame that Adele was cut off during the Brit Awards. However shocked at the finger up
I appreciate it was not meant for the fans, but think of the example that she showed her young followers, shame on you Adele!

rude very rude. no humility what so ever. there was no need for the middle finger, meant for the producers or not. thought she's proud to be british,
    • Ian  •  2 months ago
She does not have to. Technically it's practically just your raised middle finger like o my god big, huge deal!
