Adam Lambert to Replace the Late Freddie Mercury in Queen

Adam Lambert to Replace the Late Freddie Mercury in Queen

Don't stop him now -- Adam Lambert is on fire!

The season eight American Idol runner-up confirmed to the U.K.'s Daily Star Thursday that he has been tapped to be the lead singer of Queen -- the spot in which original member Freddie Mercury held until his untimely death in 1991.

"The intention is to pay tribute to Freddie and the band by singing some f*****g great songs," Lambert, 30, told the paper. "It's to keep the music alive for the fans and give it an energy that Freddie would have been proud of. There's no intention in my mind of replacing Freddie. That's impossible."

Adam follows in the footsteps of vocalist Paul Rodgers, 62, who went on a 2005 tour with original Queen bandmates guitarist Brian May, 64, and drummer Roger Taylor, 62.

Lambert attributes some of his success to Mercury, who he's named to be his longtime idol. In addition to singing Queen's timeless mega-hit "Bohemian Rhapsody" for his American Idol audition and performing "We Are the Champions" with Rodgers and May at the show's finale, he took the stage at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards with the duo in November to perform a medley of the band's hits.

Queen is set to headline the Sonisphere Festival tour this summer.

The Canadian fellow, Marc Martel, who is taking the helm of the Queen tribute bad - now THAT guy can sing like Freddie, and even looks like him too. I never thought I'd be inclined to like a tribute over the original, but there you have it. Why didn't Queen contact him?... Or maybe it'd just be too uncanny and weird to have someone so close in the actual band?

Is he the guy from Almost Queen? Cause he was effin' awesome. The whole band was.

I agree! I guess they went for the one that will get the most (negative) attention than for someone with actual talent.

Sorry but as someone who grew up listening to Queen I believe Freddie Mercury can NEVER be replaced or filled in for. The whole "Gay" thing does not matter to me at all but Adam Lambert taking the helm of all people is quite beyond me. Yea so Freddie was gay but Adam Lambet is flamboyant and weird as a 3 headed cat. Just my opnion take it or leave it besides "Who Wants To Live Forever".

I'm a freddie fan, but those biker & jumpsuit, acrobat leotards weren't too thrilling to look at either lol who cares as long as it's entertaining.

Lamber is "the GAY singer" ... Mecury was "a singer who happened to be gay" - there's a difference. LOVE Freddie - this is just p1ssing on his memory

C'mon now. If Freddie wasn't flamboyant, then no one is. Love him all the more for it, too.

I thought Paul Rodgers did a fantastic job!...Freddie was extremely talented....It will be interested in hearing Adam Lambert....as is difficult to fill the old shoes of the great voice of Freddie Mercury

I grew up listening to Freddie Mercury and Queen. I've seen the band several times and some would consider me a die-hard fan. However, Brian and Roger have gone to far trying to resurrect what cannot be resurrected. As intelligent and talented as the rest of the band members were, Freddie Mercury MAKES Queen what it is. Let it be already!!

I am a Freddie die hard like you but I'll listen.

There can be only one Freddie Mercury and Adam Lambert is really a stretch. Thank God that he has no intention of replacing Freddie.

why do posters keep saying He didn't win American Idol??? We all know that, the article doesn't say he did so what's up with all you people? I think he will be great as the frontman. He has an amazing vocal voice and he's flamboyant and the rest of the band will help "Be Freddy" should be a good concerts. I would buy tickets

There is NO replacing Freddie Mercury. While Paul Rodgers did a great job with Queen + Paul Rodgers, that's how they toured, these guys CANNOT go on tour as Queen alone. I'm sorry but I do NOT like Adam Lambert, if anyone can be 'too gay' its him. Freddie may have been flamboyant but he didn't shove the fact that he was gay down everyone's throat....Queen's music will never die. We hear it every day.....Led Zeppelin ended the band as a whole when John Bonham died, a great tribute to their drummer and friend...

I think he's a good fit as lead singer. Queen lives on!!!!! When are they going to tour and when do the tickets go on sale? I also think that Adam will benefit from the guidance of the original members and keep out of trouble.

I think he'd be a good fit too, just hope he can stay out of trouble.

Adam, while not quite the singer Freddie was, is a good choice. I'll allow it.

I have a hunch he'll end up the same way poor Freddie did. But wow, what a voice, Freddie I mean.
      • Vickio 3 months ago
That is an absolutely horrible sweeping generalization.

Gotta keep the Queens in Queen I guess. Hehehe. I loved Freddie Mercury and Queen. I don't see Adam Lambert living up to it.
