The Broadway-themed NBC musical series "Smash" is known for the less than fashionable wardrobe choices for star Debra Messing. But off-screen, Messing's "Smash" co-star Katharine McPhee is making more questionable accessory choices, pairing a formal red carpet dress with a pair of black studded sneakers.
While attending a promotional event for NBC Universal's winter TV lineup, 28-year-old McPhee stunned the red carpet from the ankles up in a sheer green-and-black print mini-dress, bright red lips, and a 1920s-inspired wavy updo. It's almost enough to distract from her unexpectedly casual footwear.
It could be argued that after all the dancing she does as triple-threat performer Karen Cartwright on "Smash," McPhee could use a little comfort and relaxation now that its second season is about to hit the airwaves this February. But her co-star Megan Hilty, who plays Karen's nemesis Ivy Lynn, rocked the red carpet in a grey snakeskin print dress and black peep-toe high heels.

Love it or hate it, McPhee isn't the first to turn the red carpet into a racetrack. Kristen Stewart famously pairs her red carpet outfits with a pair of Converse sneakers, so that she can speed from fan to fan, signing autographs and taking pictures.
And it's hard to hate any trend that comes endorsed by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who posed in golden bedazzled gowns and matching Chuck Taylors to promote their hosting gig for the 2013 Golden Globes on January 13.
If McPhee really wants to hop on the celebrity sneaker trend, she should invest in a pair of Isabel Marant's high-top wedge sneakers, a favourite of stars like Beyonce, Kate Bosworth, Dakota Fanning, Alicia Keys, and Anne Hathaway.
What do you think? Do sneakers have a place on the red carpet?
