The Champs Elysees is arguably the most famous street in Paris, and possibly in all of France. But actress Diane Kruger wore an outfit more reminiscent of her native country to switch on the legendary French lane's Christmas lights on Wednesday night.
Born in Algermissen, Germany, Kruger headlined the highly-attended annual lighting ceremony in a deep greenish gold brocade dress, an outfit that looked like a high-fashion adaptation of the traditional German style of dress called a dirndl. Originally a sturdy outfit for peasants living in the Alps, Kruger looked ready for the cold French night in the thick dress by Paris fashion house Lanvin, with a black roll neck shirt underneath for extra warmth. Over-the-knee boots by Brian Atwood helped keep her lower half toasty warm, too.
But topping off the 36-year-old's German look were two "Heidi"-esque braids tucked on the top of her blond head. Both Kruger and Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine rocked this look in Europe recently, predicting it to be a popular look.
Another attention-grabbing feature about Kruger's outfit was a bold belt buckle featuring a roaring tiger. Angry jungle cat or no angry jungle cat, Kruger looked super sweet and delighted to help celebrate the season beside Paris's mayor, Bertrand Delanoe. Despite being born in Germany, the actress moved to Paris in the early '90s to pursue modeling, and now splits her time between the "City of Lights" and Vancouver, B.C., the hometown of Joshua Jackson, Kruger's boyfriend since 2006.
Now that Kruger is considered a fashion icon around the world, we wouldn't be surprised to see Bavarian accents popping up at Christmas parties this holiday season.
