Justin Bieber boosts organ donations with Twitter plea

    David Becker/WireImage

The world already belongs to Justin Bieber, so why not use his fame to save it? The teen idol just became a literal lifesaver -- and all it took was a single tweet.

The "Pray" singer boosted the number of Ontario organ donors this weekend by re-tweeting a message from a young woman named Helene Campbell who needs  a lung transplant as she suffers from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

"Hey @justinbieber! I BELIEB you should use that Canadian voice of yours and save lives like mine #beanorgandonor beadonor.ca #giveblood," the 20-year-old activist tweeted the pop star Thursday.

Two days later, Bieber re-tweeted Campbell's message with the note, "i got the word....you have amazing strength. i got u."

The 17-year-old singer asked his fans to "help spread the word," and it wasn't long before the legions of Beliebers complied.

The Trillium Gift of Life Network, an Ontario organ and tissue donor agency, reported a shocking 565 people register on its website in the days after Campbell's initial tweet. A spokesperson for the organization said it would normally take three weeks to get that many registrants.

Bieber's hand in the matter did not go unnoticed. Campbell sent him a video message to thank him for "taking time out of your busy schedule" to re-tweet her message and said that she was a "Belieber."

For his part, Bieber said he was "glad to be able to help. best part of what i do."

My daughter is a fan and follows alot of the things he does. He gives a dollar from each ticket he sells to one charity or another and he is always giving to somewhere. He knows what it is like as he comes from a small town and has had to work to gewt where he is now. He always tells his "beliebers" they are beutiful and tries to help where he can. He stops to talk and sign autographs and appologizes when he can"t. He is not perfect but he is alot better than alot of the "rich and famous" out there!

if by "working to get where he is" you mean put a video up aand got famous overnight, then you're right.

This is commendable that the guy takes the time to relate with and acknowledge his fans. Says something about his character there.I'm not a fan of his music but I am a fan of the kind of person he seems to be with this habitual display of kindness

I totally agree .... he is a good kid and with mentoring of his grandparents, family and respect of his millions of fans, he will continue to do kind things. I can't think of one thing I don't like about him. A good home grown Canadian. Love Biebs!

Good for Justin! Last month, I was surprised when I took my 16-year-old son to get his new health card with photo when he was asked if he wanted to be an organ donor, he said yes and signed on the dotted line without even thinking about it.

Good boy! Everyone should sign organ donation cards. It could be me or you who needs that organ someday. I'm sure you are very proud of your son :-)

It is absolutely commendable to see many people promoting this cause for a long time and receiving little attention. Having Justin Bieber on our side is a good thing and everyone should be glad because any help is a good thing.

Justin really didn't have to respond to any request of his fans because he can have the excuse of being too busy or too rich but in this case and in many other cases, he chose to respond positively. I think that is so admirable. And this is a good thing.

Also, the fact that he responded so quickly shows that he is on our side ... the side of normal everyday people like us who are not famous but just normal hardworking people.

When famous, rich people, especially a youngster as young as Justin Bieber who is just 17 years old, cares to respond to something lke this, we all need to be thankful and happy. This is a good thing.

To Justin Bieber: Thank you for doing a good deed. I appreciate you.

Every little positive act counts and no one needs to be jealous or unhappy about it. It needs to be encouraged. And we don't live in a vaccuum. We all need each other's help.

Justin's a great role model, taking action against bullying, helping the poor, etc. People need to stop hating on him and start seeing justin for what he has done and continues to do for this world.

People forget that the music industry had a Beiber mania forever. Lets see going back 60 years of 4 generations- Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, the Beatles and now Justin. So what if you think his music sucks; Sonny James and the Shondels had bubble gum music esp. for the 11-13 year old girls back when. He is a good lucking guy with lots of money and success. Way to go Beib. I am too old to think about what sound comes out of your mouth but your actions speak volumes.

I have a lot of respect for this young man. He's very successful; good looking & he could have any woman he wants. I see why a lot of guys can be intimidated & jealous of him but most of them are under 30 & insecure anyway.

Bieber is CANADIAN...this is the way we act, live, show gratitude, and share, even our organs.

Justin works so hard and I'm really happy that he's done so much to give back. He donates money from every ticket sold and helps out at various charities not to mention his own charity. Yes he did get famous with the help of many videos but it did not happen over night, it took months of trying to place him and find an audience for him. He went to countless radio stations and built up his fan base. Canadian's should be proud of him, even if you don't like his music.
