Drake and Common have been in a hip-hop battle since November, with Common's last move being a remix of Rick Ross's "Stay Schemin" (in which he describes the Canadian rapper as "Canada Dry"). Now the ball is in Drake's court, but it seems like he's done playing.
In an interview with Nah Right, Drake said he is not going to respond to Common's latest jab. However, Drake's supposed nonresponse is filled with digs at Common.
Asked whether he will be responding to Common, Drake said, "No. Despite how it's been worded by him, that situation is not a 'hip-hop moment' or a 'battle for the sake of musical integrity.' … It's a ploy for attention around the release of an album."
The Canuck superstar added, "More than anything, it was just disappointing, 'cause what kid isn't a fan of what Common has done for our genre? A guy who made such an incredible career for himself based off expressing genuine feelings about life and love is now targeting me for sharing my story."
The two rappers have been battling it out since last year, when Common released his single "Sweet." In the song, Common seemed to take aim at Drake with lyrics like, "You should never wanna go against me/You know man, you too soft for that man" and "Singing all around me man, la la la/You ain't motherf---ing Frank Sinatra." Drake fans took this as a jab at the Canuck (Drake had channeled Sinatra in a promo for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards) and began tweeting up a storm about the feud.
Next up to bat was Drake, who responded in Rick Ross's "Stay Schemin," which was released Jan. 6. In the track, Drake rhymed, "I just ask that when you see me, you speak up ni**a that's all/Don't be ducking like you never wanted nothing." And in response to Common's lyric that the Canuck rapper is "soft," Drake rapped, "It's feeling like rap changed, it was a time it was rugged/Back when if a ni**a reached it was for the weapon, nowadays ni**as reach just to sell their record."
Common quickly made his next move, releasing a remix of "Stay Schemin," where he directly names his opponent. "I'm taking too long with this amateur guy/You ain't wet nobody, ni**a, you Canada Dry," Common rhymed. And in case that wasn't clear enough, he added, "Soft ni**a, make no mistake, I'm talking to Drake."
Now that Drake said he's dropping the hip-hop battle, will Common keep playing -- or will he declare himself the winner?
