Barenaked Ladies set to release BNL Strong Beer, their own brew

Naked women, craft beer, and chocolate. It's hard to imagine a better combination, right?

Well, it's all coming true, because Canadian folk band Barenaked Ladies have announced they are creating their own brand of beer by teaming up with Ontario craft brewers The Flying Monkeys. The brew is described as "a fudge-y imperial chocolate stout" that's 11 per cent alcohol, so we're expecting it to taste like a million dollars.

Flying Monkeys founder Peter Chiodo first thought of combining the world of craft brewing with music when he tried a Pearl Jam tribute beer called "Faithful," made by Delaware brewer Dogfish Head. Hoping to involve musicians more closely with the brewing process, he reached out to a few bands -- and BNL jumped at the chance.

Though it was Chiodo's recipe, the guys of Barenaked Ladies came by the brewery to get a crash course in the process. Drummer Tyler Stewart even tweeted a photo of himself holding some of the ingredients.

"We're putting organic Ecuadorean Cocoa Nibs in our beer," he wrote.

"All they said was that they wanted it to be the kind of beer you could share. I bounced the idea of a chocolate imperial stout off them, and they liked it," said Chiodo.

But for all the creative minds at work, the name they came up with is BNL Strong Beer.  A bit underwhelming, no? (We were expecting something like Barenaked Brew.) But the case the beer comes in is still pretty cool -- it features neon hand-drawn artwork by Kevin Hearn against a black background, underneath the signature yellow Flying Monkeys logo. The stout will definitely stand out on LCBO shelves next month, selling for $13.95 per 750 ml bottle.

The release of the beer is timed with Barenaked Ladies' "Symphony Barenaked" cross-Canada tour, where they'll play Holiday classics and some hits from their own discography, such as "If I Had $1,000,000," "Brian Wilson," "The Old Apartment," and "One Week."
